Clear

MRP-48 Mr. Paint Super Clear 30ml (19,67/100ml)

There aint no range of colors without a proper Clear. This Clear does not clogg fine detail which is a good thing when it comes to capillary effects on pin washes. I have been there often: That one hatch on the fuselage: Pretty flat and not really an example of perfect molding. Seemed to be ok prior painting, after all the coats really a bit clogged. A wash doesnt stick really well. Mr. Paint´s superfine Inks reduce the amount of color required and so does this Clear. Keep your details clean. ;-)

What is that?

This product creates a protective coat on your natural metal finishes. While working on a multi-layer NMF, we sometimes reach a point where we need to seal it in order to prep for decals and/or weathering. Usually we often use Clear for that, such as Gunze or Tamiya. GNZ/TAM are colors which require to be thinned with Lacquer Thinner or alike, and thats where the problem starts on a NMF. When our Gloss Black base coat has been thinned with same thinner as we use for our clear, the thinner used in the clear coat will correspond with the base coat through the metalizer. It will dissolve the basecoat for a moment, enough to disturb the fine pigmentation and ruin the finish. ALC 600 does not dissolve an acrylic basecoat because it is water based. Therefore no harm done. I´ve been on that point several times and this product is the only one I know which provides a 100% safety net.

I also have noticed that some enamel washes disturb the NMF. If we enhance panel lines using a pin wash, we usually let that wash flow, let it dry and whipe it away using turpentine, right? I have experienced that these washes often do not completly disappear on the areas where we dont want them, leaving shadows and traces. MiG productions washes are notorious for that, no matter how well they perform otherwise. ALC-600 again eliminites these unwanted effects entirely because turpentinoids do not dissolve the water based ALC-600.

Apply several thin mists until the coat is leveled and glossy. If you experience a milky bleaching during application, caused by the whiteish color of this transparent medium, just keep cool and let it dry. It will be crystal clear after curing.

Mr. Top Coat Gloss

This is BANG stuff. I remember the first time I used it. I shot it on a V-1 model and all of the sudden a had an apparently thick layer of clear on the model, clogging all details and so on. I was like "OMG...Noooooooooo!!!!" Not knowing what to do with it, I put the model aside and went out of the room. After a while I came back and looked on the poor lil V-1. I wasn´t sure...but isnt it actually looking a bit better now? The thicknes of the layer obviously had decreased. Ok!? Interesting. Maybe there is some hope. I did something else and went back to the project, again after like...some 5 minutes maybe? Surprise! Perfectly glossy, better as I would have been able to paint that by airbrush. I just have discovered the secret of this product: Its a self-levelling high gloss clear, providing shiny clear coats like a snap. Luv it.

Setter & Softer

Mr. Mark Setter (18,50€/100ml)

Thats what keeps your decals away from silvering. It also allows decal application on flat or satin surfaces. Last but not least: it delivers the bond it takes to work decal-on-decal or mask-on-decal. Good stuff.

Mr. Mark Softer (18,50€/100ml)

Some decals need to be placed on rather well detailed surfaces. We want our decals snug to the surface right? If we treat them with this stuff right after application, it will look very messy after a few seconds. Stay cool. During drying it all will be good again and even better than it was before. Uschi´s woodgrain decals do not require this product because we use a decal paper which is very thin and flexible already. Softer might be recommended for a decal that comes with the kit, for instance.

Thinners

Mr Color Levelling Thinner (400ml)

A Lacquer-based thinner which includes quite some retarder, making sure you can apply super gloss coats. In combination with Gunze Gloss Black, the perfect guy for a bare metal basecoat. He´s also the "right guy" for glossy clear finishes. Apply the color in 5-6 steps. First 2-3 mists are just to soften the surface a little bit in a controlled manner. Dont make them too thick, just give a few bursts to the area and move on. You dont need to wait too long between the layers. I wait some 1-2 minutes and move on, following in parts the wet-in-wet principle. The remaining 2-3 coats should be applied more and more wet, not that misty like the first ones. We now should be on our way to a  super levelled and shiny surface.

Mr. Color Thinner (400ml)

When the Levelling Thinner is your agent for glossy tasks, this one here is the right guy for the regular paint job. It belongs to the category of Lacquer Thinners. These thinners deliver an extraordinary good spray pattern. The atomization is second to none. I recommend to thin down colors at least down to 50/50. For color gradiation I often work like 70/30 CTR (Color-Thinner-Ratio).

Primers and Fillers

Primers are essential assets for clean scale model building and painting. We can sand our plastic as good and fine as we can, there always will be those tiny scratches which just show up when the paint comes in. "Where the hell do you come from!?" is what some of us have said, facing those little ugly scratches which were certainly invisible before we started the paintjob.

"Revealers", or maybe "Indicators" also would be a fitting description for this type of products. They show us where we have forgot to remove some CA excess, or that spot where joint lines are still visible, despite all our previous effort to hide them.

Primers include the opportunity to fix our issue by filling, sanding and polishing, before we have gone to far for an easy fix.

Colored primers do allow an even better detection of problematic sections, compared to a Grey primer on Grey plastic. These Primers also include the potential to deliver some kind of a "preshading". On many occasions we can now skip that step and reduce the number of color layers applied. That can be quite handy when we run at risk to clogg delicate detail.

500 or 1500? Mr Surfacer or Mr. Finishing Surfacer? Thats what some of us may think while being on the look out for the best primer. It depends on what you are doing is the answer. Wanna do a multi-layered Hairpray chipping, using short-cut bristle brushes? You fear running at risk to scratch right down to the plastic while maltreat your layers of paint? Go for Mr Surfacer 500 or maybe 1000 and allow your paint having some "Grip" on the surface.

You wanna do that fine and delicate, subtile Zenthal Light kinda paint job? You have really delicate details like rivets and panel lines, running at risk to clogg them? You would like to use as less paint as possible and certainly wanna avoid "pigment pile up"? Go for the higher numbers like 1500 and give Mr. Finishing Surfacer a shot. You will notice the difference.

Airbrush. All these primers can be thinned with Mr Color Thinner or Mr. Color Levelling Thinner.

Also worth to be considered: Primers can be used to add texture to objects which come rather flat. Just treat them with a bristle brush while drying. This example has been created by Michael Fichtenmayer (a.k.a. Fichtenfoo) of Industria Mechanika. Check out his amazing range of resin kits here.

I may recommend to check out the two vids right here, made by my good friend Erik Roberson as part of his always very informative "Panzershoppe" video releases: Enjoy:

Clear primer for lots of apps

Mr.Metal Primer

They say its a primer and sealer for their polishing colors. Well I dont really buy that because why shall I seal a polishing color? IT WILL alter the effect and I dont want that. They also say its a primer for their polishing colors. I also dont buy that because whats Mr. Surfacer good for then? Sometimes you know....you just stay there and....speechless. There is one thing this stuff is cool for though: Priming Photo Etch parts in order to avoid chipping down to the bare brass. Its a little bit elastic compared to a standard acrylic clear so its kinda resistant during handling PE with tweazers. These elastic properties also can be handy when we have an old and fragile decal. Its like a stabilizer then. Got it on my bench and prime my PE with it. Color doesnt chip anymore. Cool.

Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Grey (40ml)

Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Grey is a fine textured satin primer, recommened to be used on areas which will recieve a glossy finish at the end. (Alclad2 for example). If we use the standard primers, such as Mr Surfacer 500 for example, we will have to polish the standard primer in order to be able to build up the shine on the Alclad basecoat. We can remarkably reduce these efforts when we use a primer which is more on the shiny side, if that makes sense. Can be thinned with Mr. Color Thinner and Mr. Color Levelling Thinner.

COLORED Primers

Colored primers include some really great advantages in my opinion:

  • They save me layers of paint.
  • They deliver a completely new appearance if used properly.
  • They deliver an "integrated colored basecoat" for maximum control of my preshadings.
  • They set me in a "new connection" with my model during priming because I have a better impression of how it´s going to look like.
  • They reduce the risk of clogged detail.

Plus all the other advantages like exposing faults, beeing polishable, work as fillers and so on. Meanwhile we have quite some colored primers available from various manufacturers.

A few however, really pop out of the crowd: The Mr. Paint Primers.

The texture of these is rather fine (satin) and they come in three colors for now ( June 20th, 2014), which is BLACK, LIGHT GREEN and OLIVE GREEN.

These primers have an absolute key asset on their disposal:

They are three in one. Mr. Paint primers work on PLASTIC, RESIN and METAL.

This is a quite revolutinary product, at least I am not aware of anyone having released it already. It combines the properties of a primer (filling, polishable) with a metallic appearance. I gave it a try and found the results to be very interesting. After a dry buff with some 40000 mesh, the results reminded me on a oxydation of aluminium as it can be seen on long-term-parked aircraft.
This can be a nice addition to some panels on a in-service-aircraft and it also can be a great base to start from for a rather worn finish. I consider it being a nice addition to the paint range on your bench. As with any Mr. Paint Products, one can dilute it with lacquer thinner (TAM Yellow cap or Mr. Color) and one can slso clean the airbrush with these aforementioned thinners.

Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black (40ml)

I also use the rattle can and I like it a lot, but sometimes one needs a lil bit more control while priming smaller parts, for instance. The superfine satin finish is ideal to avoid the accumulation of pigments caused by overspray and turbulences. (Wing root issue). Its also a great primer for Uschi´s Metallic pigments. Can be thinned with Mr. Color Thinner and Mr. Color Levelling Thinner.

Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black

Again funky stuff for the advanced scale modeller. Usually we prime and paint the basecoat subsequently, right? In case you would like to go for Black as a base coat, we save one color coat here, avoiding clogged details. Another benefit of this product is that we now have the color of the primer as a trigger to play with as well. Black is great color for preshading. If we have our model primed in Black and we only bright up panel centers we can skip the preshading. Not a bad product, aint it? This product has a very fine satin texture and is buffable.
